Conservation Scientist

 

Dr. Glenn Gates conducts scientific analyses of materials in the collection at the Walters Art Museum. This includes paints, pigments, dyes, metal alloys, corrosion products, glass, enamels, textile, ink, paper, and parchment. Questions that arise in his field may include issues surrounding authenticity, preservation, or methods of manufacture. His research interests include applications of nanotechnology to the understanding and preservation of cultural heritage and leveraging research discoveries for education in science and technology. His background is based on chemistry and materials science and engineering, with some art history. Glenn has a Ph.D. in Physical (Polymer) Chemistry from University of South Florida, a Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Florida, and a Bachelor of Arts from New College in Chemistry/Art Materials. Previously, Glenn has worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Harvard Art Museums, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. He has worked at the Walters since 2010.
