Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Dr. Joseph Bennett grew up in the Philadelphia area, where he was exposed to science and art at an early age through frequent trips to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute, and the Academy of Natural Sciences. He also attended colleges in the City of Brotherly Love, earning a B.S. in Chemistry from Drexel University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009. Dr. Bennett’s first postdoctoral position was at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, where he co-developed computational methodology to access new materials for energy independence. His second postdoctoral position was at the University of Iowa, working with the Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology, where he studied mineral surface interactions using high-performance computing. He joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland Baltimore County in July of 2019 as an Assistant Research Professor, where he is developing a research group with expertise in computational inorganic chemistry, specializing in the design and discovery of new materials capable of providing cleaner energy and safer drinking water.
