Alex Taylor is an undergraduate student studying Chemistry and Archaeology at Johns Hopkins University. His two majors are embodied by the SCIART program, and he has found a perfect fit for his interests at UMBC. He is eager to explore more about the intersection between science and art in conservation. Alex is on a team studying surface chemistry of silver tarnish on gilded artifacts. The goal of the project is to be able to remove tarnish via chemical or mechanical means without removing any silver or gold from the artifact. At the Walters Art Museum, the team is supervised by Dr. Glenn Gates, the Conservation Scientist there. Alex will enter his Junior year in the fall and is hoping to pursue Museum and Material Science after completing his undergraduate experience. Alex is involved in organic synthesis research and tour guides for the admissions office at Johns Hopkins University.
