Marie Desrochers is a senior at the University of Central Arkansas. She is studying Art History and minoring in Chemistry and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. She intends to pursue graduate school in art conservation. This summer she is working with fellow SCIART students Alex Taylor and Samson Maina under Dr. Glenn Gates, conservation scientist at the Walters Art Museum. Their project focuses on better understanding problematic mechanical and chemical cleaning techniques for gilded silver objects.They intend to characterize the surface complexes formed on these objects after cleaning with cosmetic sponges and traditional tarnish-removing acid solutions. In addition to her studies, Marie enjoys making art in a variety of media, hiking, and traveling. Upon her August 2016 graduation, she will work as a conservation intern at the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
